De verschillende subpopulaties van lymfocyten vervullen elk een specifieke rol in het immuunsysteem. Deze subpopulaties kunnen immunologisch herkend worden dank zij de aanwezigheid van specifieke antigenen op het celoppervlak. Deze antigenen worden ingedeeld volgens de CD-nomenclatuur (cluster designation code) met een nummer (voorbeeld: CD4), waaraan een w (workshop) wordt toegevoegd voor nummers die slechts voorlopig werden toegekend (zoals: CDw60). Momenteel zijn er meer dan 130 CD- en CDw-nummers toegekend ! Door de beschikbaarheid van zeer specifeke monoclonale antilichamen en technieken zoals flowcytometrie kunnen deze verschillende subpopulaties routinegewijs worden opgespoord.

Aan de buitenkant zitten altijd uitsteeksels die voor elk soort weefsel en elk soort ziekteverwekker verschillend zijn. Zo’n uitsteeksel heet een ‘antigeen’. Je immuunsysteem gaat ervan uit dat alles wat vreemd is moet worden vernietigd.
